The 1921–1922 famine in Tatarstan was a result of "war communism" policy combined with non-russian territories' etnocide, realized in Tatar ASSR as well as elsewhere in the other regions inhabitated by tjurk nations (Bashkirs, Nogais, Kazakhs) and well managed farmlands of  "Volga-German" collonists near Volga river.

It started in autumn 1921.

More than 2,000,000 (up to 50% of local nations population) peasants were starved to death particularly in Arsk, Sviyazhsk, Mamadysh, Menzelinsk, Spassk, Tetyushi and Chelny kantons.

Later, when facts became public, the emergency feeding points were established throughout the "republic".

The Soviet government invited international organizations, such as International Workers Relief and American Relief Administration to improve the situation. More than $78 million were donated through international organisations. More than 1/3 of international aid ($28 million) came from USA.

On July 1, 1922, more than 1,600,000 were fed at those emergency points.

Of the total number of farms, 86,000 disappeared (16.2% of total). After the famine, the leadership of the republic was dismissed

The famine leads to deaths of 2 million in Tatarstan, and altogether more than 5 million including other formerly Tjurk inhabitated areas (Bashkirostan, Samara region, Mari etc.) previously collonised by Russian Empire in 17-19th centuries.

Tatars' situation in Tatar ASSR and in Volga-Ural region in 1921-1922 was catastrophic as half of Volga Tatar population in USSR died. This famine is also known as "terror-famine" and "famine-genocide" in Tatarstan.

The Soviets resettled ethnic Russians after the famine in Tatar ASSR and in Volga-Ural region, causing the Tatar share of the population to decline to less than 50%.

All-Russian Tatar Social Center (VTOTs) has asked the United Nations to condemn the 1921 Tatarstan famine as Genocide of Tatars.
