Josef Vašíček (pronounced /ˈjosɛf ˈvɑʃiːtʃɛk/ in English; September 12, 1980 – September 7, 2011) was a Czech professional ice hockey centre who last played for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League.
Vašíček was related by marriage to Buffalo Sabres left wing Thomas Vanek; Vanek's brother is married to Vašíček's sister.
- Vašíček was drafted 91st overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
- He scored his first hat trick against the San Jose Sharks.
- Won Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006.
- Vašíček was traded to the Nashville Predators in the Summer of 2006 for Scott Walker.
- In early 2007, he was traded back to Carolina for Éric Bélanger.
- On August 14, 2007,Vašíček signed a 1-year, $750,000 contract with the New York Islanders.
- On July 4, 2008, Vašíček signed a contract with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League
- He won the World Championships with Czech Republic in 2005.[2]
On September 7, 2011, Vašíček was killed, when a Yakovlev Yak-42 passenger aircraft, carrying the entire Lokomotiv team, crashed just outside Yaroslavl, Russia. The team was traveling to Minsk to play their opening game of the season, with its coaching staff and prospects.
