Marika Pogány was born in Slovakia in 1943 and survived the clutches of both Hitler and Stalin. Her mother and uncle were the only ones to survive Auschwitz; the rest of the family was murdered by the Nazi war machine. She came to Australia in the 1960s and dedicated her life to helping others. Marika served more than 12,000-15,000 kosher meals to the poor and needy and received Australia's Mensch of the Year Award. Marika was gunned down by a pro-Palestinian terrorist at Bondi Beach, Australia, while celebrating the first night of Hanukkah.
