Antonov An-22 with registration RF-08832 broke apart mid-air and crashed into the Uvodskoye Reservoir
A Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) transport aircraft crashed into the waters of the Uvodskoye Reservoir in the Furmanovsky District during a post-repair test flight. Responders recovered only floating fragments of the wreckage, with initial reports indicating that all seven crew members aboard perished in the incident.
The aircraft was an Antonov An-22 Antei, a Soviet-era heavy-lift transport developed in the 1960s. It made its maiden flight in 1965 and entered service with the Soviet (later Russian) Air Force shortly thereafter. A total of 68 examples were produced, including two prototypes, though by the early 2000s, only a limited number remained operational.
Russia had already planned to phase out the An-22 from frontline service, with full retirement slated for 2024. According to the Russian Planes database, only three An-22s are currently airworthy, while an additional 10 sit in storage (seven under Russian ownership and three with Antonov), and the remainder have been scrapped or destroyed.
