CARLOS ALBERTO PERONACE (* 12 February 1933 in Buenos Aires; † 9 March 1990 in Buenos Aires)
Chess composer
Life:
Carlos Peronace had a good literary culture and mastered, in his own way, philosophy, art and especially mathematics.
Chess composition:
He was born in Buenos Aires and his activity as a composer began in the 1950s, his first international successes being a third prize and an honourable mention in the competition held by a Swiss newspaper, the "Basler Nachrichten".
An honourable achievement for him and for Argentina was the Olympic gold medal in Helsinki in 1952.
The complete list of his prizes and distinctions in international competitions corresponds to almost exactly half of his total production, which is undoubtedly an outstanding achievement.
He founded and edited a bimonthly magazine called "Ajedrez Artístico". He also wrote in other specialised magazines, not only on the art of composition, but also on general chess topics, and in this respect his dynamic column in the magazine "Ajedrez", which he called with the ingenious anagram "Temas y Mates", will always be remembered.
Among the themes of his compositions are the reciprocal "Zugzwang" and the two-coloured "Switchback", but he has a theme of his own named after him.
Success in chess composition:
The list of awards and distinctions are: Prizes: 4 First, 2 Second, 4 Third (one the collaboration and one ex-aequo), 2 Fourth (one ex-aequo). Honourable Mentions: 4 (one in collaboration).
From 1967 to 1970, Peronace published the magazine "Ajedrez Artistico", which was dedicated to chess composition. A double issue was published every two months. After 17 issues, he ceased publication due to financial problems.
Peronace died of pulmonary oedema in 1990.
