Joseph Edmund Peckover (* 15 November 1896 in London; † 16 April 1982 in New York City) was the first important study composer in the United States.

Life
Peckover's educational path led via Great Britain, France and Switzerland. During the First World War, he served as an infantry officer in the British Expeditionary Force in Egypt and Palestine from 1916 to 1919. He returned to London for health reasons, but soon went to Canada and moved to New York City in the 1920s. He served in the US armed forces during the Second World War.

He was a portrait artist, but found time for many other interests. He was one of the leading cricket authorities in the United States.

His first endgame study was written in a British military hospital in Cairo

Peckover's first study was written in a British military hospital in Cairo and appeared in 1916 in the newspaper The Egyptian Gazette, which was still published in Alexandria at the time.

From 1921, Peckover reactivated the chess columns of two newspapers, in which some of his studies also appeared. He did much for the development of chess studies in the United States.

Peckover published the majority of his more than 60 endgame studies from the end of the 1950s. From 1961 to 1965 he was editor of the studies section of the magazine American Chess Quarterly.

About his chess studies:

His studies are generally characterised by a breezy structure and pointed, subtle play. The starting point of his chess compositions are natural. Superfluous material in the introduction is avoided. His chess studies are generally well thought out.
