He played chess for decades in the national league with Mozart, later also Neumarkt and Schwarzach. He achieved an international rating of over 2300, the FM grade, and was also an excellent blitz player. In his 20s and 30s, he enjoyed playing in the Cafe Mozart. He appreciated the chess player Peter Gold, who never played in tournaments.

Schöppl was a welcome guest at the Café Mozart in Getreidegasse 22 in the city of Salzburg. He also enjoyed kibitzing when other people were playing chess. He was well known on the national chess scene.
