Viktor Lvovich Khenkin (Russia, 01.01.1923 - 20.01.2010)

Viktor Lvovich Khenkin ( January 1, 1923 , Moscow - January 20, 2010 , ibid.) - Russian chess player , journalist and theorist, chess columnist for the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper.

Master of Sports of the USSR (1962).

Champion of the CA DSO "Wings of the Soviets" (1958).

Known as an endgame specialist .

Together with Yu. L. Averbakh , V. A. Chekhover , N. A. Kopaev and I. L. Maizelis , he participated in the work on a series of books " Chess endings ".

He is the author of the section "Queen vs. Rook" in the volume devoted to the queen endgame. [one]

Member of the Great Patriotic War . Guard Lieutenant. Participated in the defense of Leningrad .

He was commander of a platoon of submachine gunners, commander of a rifle company, chief of staff of a reconnaissance regiment.

In June 1944 he was seriously wounded in the Vyborg region .

He was awarded the Order of the Red Star for military merit . 

He was buried with his mother and older brother in the columbarium of the Donskoy cemetery in Moscow.
