Siegfried Brehmer (* 12 January 1917 in Lindhof, district of Briesen (Dębowa Łąka); † 30 May 1996 in Potsdam-Babelsberg) was a German mathematician, university lecturer and chess composer.

His life
Brehmer graduated from high school in Breslau in 1936. He then trained as a bank clerk until 1938. During the Second World War, he was drafted into the air force as a radio operator. During the war, he studied maths by correspondence. He was taken prisoner, from which he was released in 1946. He then taught as a new teacher in Welzow, and from 1949 he was a lecturer at the Cottbus Teacher Training Institute. From 1953, he studied mathematics at the Brandenburg State University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam, gaining his doctorate in 1957. He later worked as a professor at the Potsdam University of Education. He wrote several textbooks. After his retirement, he became involved in computer programming and returned to problem chess. He programmed a user interface for Heinz Schwind's chess solving programme Problem.

Chess composition
Due to his profession, Brehmer occupied himself with composing in three periods. Between 1935 and 1938, then between 1948 and 1953 and finally from 1982 onwards, he created substantial problems. In total, he created around 160 problems, mainly three-movement pieces. Of these, he received a prize for more than 50 works, and around 40 others were honoured. 15 compositions were included in the FIDE albums, for which he was awarded the title FIDE Master in 1990.
