Eero Johannes Saarenheimo ( 21 June 1919 Helsinki - 16 July 2018 Kauniainen ) was a Finnish journalist and non-fiction author with the title of Professor , who was employed by Yleisradio for a long time , from 1965 as programme manager until his retirement in 1977.

Career
"Eero Saarenheimo graduated with a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1944 and worked as a lecturer in history, social studies and economics at Helsinki Normal High School from 1945 to 1951. Saarenheimo had started his radio career at Maaselä Front Radio and moved to Yleisradio in 1952 as a reporter for talk programmes. In 1965 he was appointed programme manager at Yleisradio. As part of his work, he travelled to France and Italy as well as to African and Southeast Asian countries between 1947 and 1964. In the years 1968-1970 he was deputy general director of Yleisradio. [1]

Saarenheimo's influence, particularly on the development of radio's cultural programmes, was considerable. He emphasised internationality and civilisation. A topic close to Saarenheimo's heart in his own programme production was the cultural history of the Mediterranean region. He had an extensive literary output, e.g. studying history and cultural history as well as broadcasting. He also held numerous positions of trust in cultural life. Saarenheimo retired in 1977 and was awarded the title of professor in 1979.

Genre
Saarenheimo's father was the literary scholar Mikko Saarenheimo and his wife was the literary scholar Kerttu Saarenheimo .

Die Schwalbe (magazine) for chess problems wrote:

Eero Johannes Saarenheimo (21.6.1919-16.7.2018) composed chess problems from 1935 to 1959 and was secretary of the Finnish Problemists' Association from 1937 until the outbreak of the Second World War. Much later, in 1999, his book Ruutulaudan lumoissa was published, in which he describes Finnish problem chess history and which also contains a collection of his problems. - Saarenheimo played an important role in Finnish cultural life. For many years he held a prominent position at the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation. Prior to this, Saarenheimo, who had studied history and social sciences in Helsinki, travelled extensively as a journalist to Mediterranean countries and Southeast Asia, focusing on social and, above all, historical and cultural-historical topics. In the Google translation of a Finnish obituary, his cultural versatility was stated (probably not entirely correctly, but still originally) as follows: Saarenheimo "was a civilised ensemble that the entire Finnish nation could enjoy on the radio for years".
