Jesper Jespersen (1.8.1848-7.8.1914), one of the most important Danish composers, died 100 years ago. The pastor from Svendborg published more than 3000 chess problems and published many articles in Skakbladet (he started a series of articles for beginners in the very first issue in 1904) and in Tidskrift för Schack. He became the first honourary member of the Dansk Skakproblem Klub.
Jesper Jespersen composed direct movers. He also composed about 40 studies [thank you Alain!] with good results.

He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Copenhagen and was ordained pastor of the Evangelical Church. In 1886 he became pastor of St Nicholas Church in Svendborg.
He composed about 3000 problems, of which more than 200 were awarded. He contributed to numerous magazines, including the Italian Nuova Rivista degli scacchi, L'Eco degli Scacchi, Ruy Lopez and the Swedish Tidskrift för Schack. He was the first honorary member of the Danish Dansk Skak Union.
Suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for many years, he was granted leave from his pastoral duties in 1909 and lived his last years in Copenhagen.
He wrote the book 320 Danske Skakopgaver, saerlig 1872-1902 (ed. Gustaf Lindströms, Stockholm, 1902), a collection of problems of Danish authors
