Heinrich Moritz Henneberger (* 16 October 1878 in Bümpliz; † 7 April 1959 in Basel) was a Swiss chess master, chess composer, editor and mathematics teacher.
He was the older brother of Walter Henneberger and Eduard Henneberger and the father of Charlotte Urfer-Henneberger. Moriz Henneberger attended school in Basel and obtained his federal baccalaureate. He completed his studies in mathematics in Basel and Bern, graduating as a secondary school teacher and doctor. His dissertation in 1902 dealt with the theory of integrals of the Bernoulli function. After working at the bourgeois orphanage in Basel and at the Rosenberg Institute in St. Gallen, he married Emma Rickli on 6 April 1906 during his time at the Gymnasium in Bern. In 1911 he was elected as a teacher at the upper secondary school in Basel. He was elected as a teacher at the Realgymnasium in Basel in 1930. Henneberger left teaching in 1944 at the age of 66. He ended his work as secretary of the Commission for Academic Career Counselling in 1947 after 26 years.
In the military, Moriz Henneberger rose to the rank of captain and commanded an army company on active service. After 1918, he was involved in organising courses for young marksmen and for a long time was a young marksmen's leader and shooting instructor. From 1921 to 1936, Moriz Henneberger presided over the Basel Shooting Society. On his initiative, the weekday shooting club was founded to relieve the pressure on weekend shooting. In 1949 he became honorary president and in 1958 honorary veteran of the Scharfschützen-Gesellschaft Basel. He was a long-standing member of the cantonal shooting commission
.Moriz Henneberger was the sole Swiss chess champion in 1899 and 1909, and shared the title in 1906, 1911 and 1914. He took part in the 1928 Chess Olympiad in The Hague as a member of the Swiss team. He achieved his best historical Elo rating of 2366 in 1909. He was honorary president of the Basel Chess Society.
Moriz Henneberger founded the chess column in the Nationalzeitung in 1921 and ran it for almost 30 years. He composed chess problems and was also problem editor for the Schweizerische Schachzeitung from 1949 to 1956.
