Hans Lepuschütz (born 5 August 1910 in Graz, Austria-Hungary; died 6 September 1984) was an Austrian lawyer and famous chess composer

Life
Hans Lepuschütz was the son of a doctor. He began studying medicine, but then studied law and was awarded his doctorate in 1939. Lepuschütz had been a member of the Teutonia Academic Corps in Graz since his studies. From April 1933 to March 1934, he was a member of the SA Student Storm. On 12 November 1937, he joined the SS (membership number 297.469).                                                                                                                                                                              During the Second World War, he initially became a soldier in the Waffen-SS in 1940. He transferred to the SD in Office III of the Reich Main Security Office in Berlin. From September 1944, he headed the department for the occupied territories in Department III A. He was promoted to SS-Obersturmführer on 9 November 1944. After the end of the war, he was imprisoned in a British prison camp. On 3 November 1947, Lepuschütz was sentenced to 15 months' hard labour by the People's Court in Graz and worked in mining. He was pardoned by the Austrian Federal President in May 1948 and was released. He subsequently worked in Graz as an employee of a transport company.

Lepuschütz was a chess composer and held the title of International Master of Chess Composition since 1966.

The Lepuschütz theme

"The Lepuschütz theme means chess provocation by White in a multimover, usually with a logical motivation. Hans Peter Rehm presented the Lepuschütz theme on berlinthema.de. Please take a look at these problems, you will not regret it. MontFuji presented in detail (in French, on France-Echecs.com) a doubled Lepuschütz and pendular movements associated with the Lepuschütz theme, as well as pendular movements associated with the doubled Lepuschütz theme and a Holst promotion." (chesscomposers.blogspot.com)

Hans Lepuschütz (5.8.1910-6.9.1984) was one of the most important Austrian composers of more -mover chess problems. His typical fusion of astute logical combinations with aesthetic mate pictures is known as the "Graz School".
