Dr Jan Dobruský (* 28 August 1853 in Skuteč; † 31 May 1907 in Královské Vinohrady) was a Czech chess composer, player and publicist. He was a lawyer by profession.
Chess composition
Dobruský was an outstanding representative of the Bohemian School. Since 1871 he composed more than 250 chess problems. His best achievements were in the four-move pieces. He is considered as one of the fathers of the Bohemian school, with Pospíšil and Konig.
Publicist
Dobruský edited the chess corner in the magazine Světozor from 1874 to 1879 and the chess section in Humoristické listy from 1874 to 1884. In 1906 he became one of the first editors of Časopis českých šachistů.
Tournaments
Dobruský was also a strong chess player. He took first place in the Český spolek šachovní tournament from 1884 to 1885 and the Šachovní klub Dobruský, one of the first Czech chess clubs, founded on 8 December 1902, was named after him.

"It should be remembered that he died 100 years ago while practising his profession as a lawyer during a court hearing when he succumbed to a long-standing heart condition. Dobrusky had been involved in chess composition since the mid-1870s and soon became one of the outstanding representatives of the Bohemian school."
