Fritz Hoffmann (* October 20, 1932 in Weißenfels; † July 12, 2016 in Weißenfels) was a German chess composer and publicist.

Chess composition
Hoffmann had been composing chess problems since the mid-1960s. He specialized in two-move chess problems.

He has been an international adjudicator for chess composition since 1976 and was awarded the title of FIDE Master of Chess Composition in 1990.

Chess publicist
Fritz Hoffmann was always present with a wealth of small and large articles, glosses, tributes, obituaries, humorous pieces in chess newspapers and on other chess events. He maintained extensive chess correspondence with the whole world. The chess players of the Halle district often had the opportunity to meet Fritz Hoffmann at the numerous trainers' courses at the Weißenfels sports school.

Private life
Hoffmann was a teacher, but was later unable to work in his profession for health reasons. He had two sons.

"Fritz Hoffmann composed two moves, helpmates and endgames and was an International Judge. He specialised in symbol problems such as letter problems. He has written several books about chess composition: "Schachkonturen" (1992) or "Tausend Jahre Schachprobleme Band 4" reviewed by Günter Büsing in die Schwalbe April 2000, quoted on berlinthema.de."

"In Fritz Hoffmann, the world of problem chess has lost one of its most distinctive, original and versatile contributors. He was not only a problem composer (he was awarded the FM title for this in 1990), but also a frequent author of books, articles, glosses, short stories and humoresques, often on peripheral subjects such as chess philately or chess history, but always in his own witty and slightly sharp style using his own word creations: He had titled his long-standing column in "ROCHADE EUROPA" "Zuggespitztes""  (schachbund.de)
