Tigran Borisovich Gorgiev (Kizlyar, 30 August 1910 - Dnipropetrovsk, 13 December 1976) was a Soviet chess composer of Ukrainian nationality and Armenian origin.
He began his career as a table player, then devoted himself entirely to study composition and achieved considerable success. He composed around 606 studies (see Dutch Website arves.org) and several dozen problems and received over a hundred prizes, including 33 first prizes in international competitions.
In 1959, he was awarded the honour of Sports Master of the Soviet Union.
FIDE appointed him International Arbiter of Composition in 1966 and International Master of Composition in 1969.
In addition to the classical studies with positions that can arise in the endgame, Gorgiev wrote many studies of the "grotesque" type with very artificial positions in which White manages a draw or a win despite largely inferior material. He is considered one of the leading experts in this genre.
Together with Valentyn Rudenko, Gorgiev wrote the book "Siege of the Black King" (Dnipropetrovsk, 1960) and with Filip Bondarenko "Soviet Studies in the Ukraine" (Kiev, 1966).
