Ilse Jutta Zambona

Remarque married Jutta Ilse Zambona, a dancer and actress, in 1925. It was a passionate relationship, and far from monogamous on either side. The two got divorced a few years later, but in 1938, when he was already involved with Marlene Dietrich, Remarque married Jutta again to enable her to immigrate to Switzerland and later gain asylum in the U.S. This photograph shows Jutta's striking resemblance to Marlene Dietrich, with whom she also shared the ability to inflict immense pain on the writer.
