Alexander Gulyaev , also known as Alexander Gulyaev and under the pseudonym Alexander Grin ( Saint Petersburg , 18 November 1908 - Saint Petersburg , 18 February 1998 ), was a Russian ( from 1924 to 1991 Soviet ) chess engineer and composer .

Biography
He graduated from the Moscow Mining Academy in 1930 with a degree in metallurgical engineering. From 1932 to 1948 he worked at the Moscow Aviation Institute in the department of non-ferrous metals, of which he was director from 1942 to 1948. He founded a school for metallurgical research. In 1955, he founded a scientific journal for metallurgy specialising in the thermal treatment of non-ferrous metals, of which he was editor-in-chief until 1990. He published around 400 articles and 14 monographs in this field.

In the field of problems, he published his first work, a problem of two, in 1924. He also composed several assistant problems. From the early 1930s he began to write studies and from 1958 published all his works under the pseudonym Alexander Grin [1] . He wrote a total of around 1000 works, of which around 300 were recognised. Of his approximately 200 published studies, eight won first prize in international competitions.

In 1956, FIDE appointed him International Judge of Composition and in 1998 Grand Master of Composition .
