Carlo Salvioli (Venice, 11 November 1848 - Mirano, 29 January 1930) was an Italian chess player chess composer and notary.

Biography
A notary by profession, his true passion in life was chess. [1]

Although he was also a strong player (he won the national tournament in Milan in 1881 and practically became Italian champion), he is best known as the author of the work "Theory and Practice of Chess", the first volume of which was published in Venice in 1885 by Typography Ferrari. It was the first Italian book with a systematic treatment of the openings and other phases of the game. It was widely distributed and had various expansions and new editions.

He dedicated the first volume to his friend Cyril Bexley Vansittart (an Englishman living in Rome since 1860), who was a major inspiration for this work and also for his competition activities. In the preface he wrote:

For the benefit of all who wish to make progress in this game without resorting to
German, English or French books, a new and complete treatise is needed.
A treatise that was readable, useful and entertaining and relevant to both
relevant to both experienced players and beginners. [2]
The second volume, devoted to semi-open openings, the donna opening and irregular openings, appeared in 1886; the third volume, devoted to the endgame , appeared in 1888.

Subsequently, the "Theoretical-practical manual of the game of chess", completed in 1899, was published in the Nuova Rivista degli Scacchi. The manual was then revised and published in 1913 by the publisher Giusti of Livorno with the title "The chess game of Gioacchino Greco, known as Calabrese".

In 1928, when he was already eighty years old, he published "The Indian Defense" and "The various defenses of Black in response to 1.e4-e5" with the Ammanati publishing house in Florence, then in 1929 with the same publisher "I giuochi irregulare" and in 1930 "The game with the queen's pawn".

Salvioli was also a composer of first-class chess studies, He published around 60 studies, many of which received various awards.

The "Carlo Salvioli Chess Club" of Venice, founded in 1920, is dedicated to his memory.

Salvioli had a passion for classical music and was also a talented pianist.

The “Carlo Salvioli Committee - Friends of the Mirano Hospital” is an association founded in 1995 to defend the hospital, which is threatened by recurring reduction projects. The committee was registered in the name of Carlo Salvioli because he left all his assets to the then Congregation of Charity, from which the Mirano Hospital later emerged. A bust in memory of the benefactor Carlo Salvioli was placed at the entrance of the Mirano Hospital, which houses “excellence” such as the Cardiovascular Department, the Department of Medical Sciences and the excellent Mother and Child Area. The hospital has state-of-the-art diagnostic and emergency services.
