Die Schwalbe, Issue 257, October 2012 (Germain magazine for chess composition) wrote
"The sudden death of Denis Blondel, which literally overtook him in the middle of his life, namely during a tennis match, has shaken the world of problem chess. He was not only the mainstay of the international FIDE album project, the editing of which had long been largely in his hands, but also a key pillar of the French problem chess scene. Almost single-handedly, he organised the 1986 PCCC meeting in Fontenay-sous-Bois just outside Paris. It was he who not only ensured the phoenix-like resurrection of Thèmes 64 in 1988 after its temporary demise, but also provided this traditional magazine with two companion magazines, Rex multiplex and Phénix, which then merged over time to form a single magazine. It remains to be hoped that the French problemists will succeed in making this Phénix fly again after its painful loss and continuing Denis' work."
