Since 1963 he worked as a laboratory head at the Biological Institute of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences .
Participant in three personal championships of the USSR in chess composition .
Since 1926 he has published about 100 chess problems and received 50 awards in competitions, including 8 first prizes.
The rating in the FIDE albums as of 24 August 2023 is 11.67 points .

Dmitry Fedorovich Petrov was born on July 7, 1909 in Türkmenabat, Turkmenistan. He was born in the family of a doctor (father - Fedor Vasilyevich Petrov, mother - Olga Nikolaevna Petrova). Most of his life he spent in Moscow.
Education
Dmitry Fedorovich graduated from the Plant School of Leningrad Agricultural Institute in 1930, and in 1931 he entered Graduate School of the All-Union Institute of Plant Industry.
Career
In the period from 1933 to 1938 Dmitry Fedorovich headed the department of genetics and cytology at the Central Genetic Laboratory of I.V. Michurin in Michurinsk, Tambov region. At the same time, he was an associate professor at the Department of Genetics at the Voronezh State University.
Since 1938 - Associate Professor, Head (since 1941) of the Department of Genetics and Selection of Voronezh State University. Since 1945 - professor, head of the department of breeding and seed production of fruit and vegetable plants of the Voronezh Agricultural Institute.
After the August session of the All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences of V.I. Lenin (1948) Petrov was dismissed from the Voronezh State University and the Voronezh Agricultural Institute for his negative attitude to the ideas of Academician T D. Lysenko. In 1948-1951 - the Head of the Laboratory of the Academy of Medical Sciences (Stalingrad). Since 1951 - the Head of the Department of General Biology of the Voronezh State Medical Institute. Later the head of the laboratory of the Biological Institute of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk.
He is the author of over 300 works, including some books.
