Gerhard Kaiser (* 11 October 1890 in Bautzen; † 13 June 1966 in Dresden) was a German chess composer and chess editor.

Chess composition
Gerhard Kaiser met Friedrich Palitzsch and Rudolf Leopold at the Dresden Chess Club. They encouraged him to create his own works.

His compositions are characterised by ingenuity, strict logic and a concise, succinct form. He composed more than 100 miniatures. His collection of miniatures comprised almost 10,000 pieces and was later taken over by Klaus-Peter Zuncke.

Editor
On 18 January 1958, Kaiser founded the chess corner of the Sächsische Zeitung, in which chess compositions still appear every other week. It first appeared under the title Schach am Wochenende (Chess at the Weekend), and since issue 246 under Unsere Schachecke (Our Chess Corner). Hans Vetter took over the editorship with issue 370, his successor from 1973 to 1992 was Günter Schiller and after his death Frank Reinhold.

From October 1961 until the end of 1964, Kaiser edited the Problems and Studies section of the magazine Schach.

His life
His parents moved to Dresden as early as 1891. Kaiser studied law in Jena, Leipzig and Berlin from 1909 and worked as a trainee lawyer at Dresden courts from 1919 to 1921. He then passed the 2nd state examination and obtained his doctorate in law. As an assessor, he entered the state administrative service and was later a government councillor in Döbeln and finally a senior government councillor in Pirna.
