Harry Viggo Tuxen (31-03-1889 - 10-05-1968) British-Austrian chess player and chess composer
He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England, United Kingdom (United Kingdom). By profession he was an engineer, factory manager, and chess chairman.
Chess composition
Harry Tuxen was one of the Good Companions. His style in two movers can best be seen in this first prize in the 1919 Meredith tourney or in this black S wheel.
Magazine "Die Schwalbe" wrote about him in the Issue 291, June 2018:
Harry Viggo Tuxen (31 March 1898-10 May 1968) was Danish, but had a very international CV: born in England, after studying in Copenhagen he worked as a young engineer for a Dutch company on a sugar cane plantation in Java for 10 years before returning to Denmark and opening a chemical factory there. He spent the last years of his life in Austria and died half a century ago in Graz. Tuxen was one of the best-known Danish chess composers.
He created around 500 chess problems, mainly two-movement pieces.
From 1932 to 1948 he was chairman of the Danish Problemists' Association, and from 1955 to 1963 he headed the Danish Chess Federation. During his stay in the Far East, he developed the Java theme belonging to the white line combinations. Leif C. Schmidt published a selection of Tuxen's problems in W.\ Jörgensen's book series in 1984. His problem selected here shows the semi-fixed theme in six variations: 1.Lb8 [2.T:c5#] 1.- L:e3/S:e3 2. Tc4/Td7#, 1.- L:f8 2.Te7#, 1.- Ld4+ 2.Tc3#, 1.- L~{} 2.Df4#; 1.- S:c7 2.L:c7#, 1.- Sf4 2.Tf7# and 1.- T:e6 2.Sd7#.
