Iosef Krikheli

Iosef (or Iossif) Mikhailovich Krikheli (or Kricheli) (* Sunday, 10.05.1931  - † Tuesday, 20.09.1988 in Sochumi)

Chess composer of moremovers and helpmates. He was also a study composer.

 He had a doctorate in physics.

Iossif or Josif or Joseph Michailowitsch Krikheli or Kricheli ( Russian: Крихели, Иосиф Михайлович ) was a Soviet composer of chess studies and chess problems, born on 10. May 1931 in Tskhinvali in South Ossetia and died there on 22. September 1988. 

Death

In 1988, on Tuesday he died of a heart attack during a game of blitz chess at the All-Union Congress of Chess Composers in Sochumi.

His compositional successes

 He has been International Master of Chess Composition since 1971 and International Grand Master of Chess Composition in 1984 and has published almost 1,500 chess compositions, including about fifty studies.

Specialising in moremover problems (more than five moves) and help mates, he is considered one of the greatest problem composers of the 20th century.

A PhD physicist and a Grandmaster of Chess Composition, he didn't just solve problems; he redefined the limits of human creativity. While modern masters like Martin Minski or Peter Siegfried Krug utilize the power of engines to refine their art, Kricheli’s legacy stands as a testament to unaided human brilliance. His helpmates and more-movers are not just puzzles; they are aesthetic masterpieces of economy and logic.

• Der Universalgelehrte: Er war promovierter Physiker, was seine Vorliebe für logische Strenge und komplexe Strukturen erklärt. Seine Fähigkeit, Ordnung aus dem Chaos der Figuren zu schaffen, war fast übermenschlich.
• Meister aller Klassen: Kricheli war einer der wenigen, die den Großmeistertitel für Schachkomposition (verliehen 1984) in einer Breite rechtfertigten wie kaum ein anderer. Er schuf über 1.500 Kompositionen.
• Der „Hilfsmatt-Gott“: Obwohl er in Studien und Mehrzügern brillant war, gilt er weltweit als einer der angesehensten Spezialisten für Hilfsmattaufgaben. Hier erreichte er eine Tiefe und Paradoxie, die ohne Computerhilfe fast unvorstellbar ist.
• Aesthetik des Logischen: Seine Mehrzüger zeichnen sich durch „logische Inhalte“ aus – Aufgaben, bei denen jeder Zug eine tiefere Notwendigkeit hat und die Lösung wie ein mathematischer Beweis wirkt.

Ein Denkmal für das „Genie am Brett“ Kricheli starb, wie er lebte: Direkt am Schachbrett während eines Kongresses in Suchumi im Jahr 1988. Ein Schicksal, das seine Hingabe unterstreicht.
