Chess composer and International master 

Chess composition
Jan Rusek learned to play chess at the age of 15. His first assignment was published in the Lemberg newspaper Dziennik Ludowy in 1929. In total, he composed around 2,900 chess compositions of various genres and won 380 awards, including 71 first prizes. [32 of his tasks were included in the FIDE albums, for which he was awarded the title of International Master in chess composition. From 1958 he was also an international judge

Rusek was a five-time Polish champion  (3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 10th championships) and a two-time champion in auxiliary problems (5th and 6th championships). 

Editor

He was chairman of the problem department of the Silesian State Chess Association. In addition, he was editor (1957–1958) of the chess composition department “Chess Nowiny” (1938–1939) of the newsletter of the Silesian District Chess Association. Between 1966 and 1970 he was a member of the Examination Committee of the Polish Chess Federation.

He created also about 17 endgame studies.

About his chess studies: 
He composed some good chess studies. However, the motifs in these endgame studies have often been used by other study composers.
