Lazar Borisovich Zalkind (14 January (2 January in the old style) , Kharkov - 25 June 1945 , Komsomolsk-on-Amur ) - Soviet chess composer. Economist.
Biography
Private lecturer at the University of Moscow.
A member of the SDAPR since 1903, he was a Bolshevik for a long time, a Menshevik after the February Revolution and headed the Moscow Committee for Elections to the Constituent Assembly. On 25 June 1917, he was elected a member of the Moscow City Duma according to the list of the United Social Democrats.
After October 1917, he no longer took part in political activities. In the 1920s - head of the statistical department of the People's Commissariat of Trade.
Editor of the problem sections in the magazines "Chess Herald" (1913 - 1916) and "Chess" (1922 - 1929). Chairman of the "Association of Lovers of Chess Problems and Etudes" of the All-Russian Chess Section ( 1926 - 1930 ).
He began composing chess compositions in 1903. Zalkind is the author of over 500 chess compositions, most of them three-move pieces. Over 60 of his compositions were honoured at various international and national competitions.
In 1931 he was unduly repressed in the case of the "Trade Union Bureau of the Central Committee of Mensheviks" and sentenced to eight years in prison (served in the Verkhneuralsk political isolation ward) and then to five years in a labour camp (served in BAMLag).
Died in exile. Posthumously rehabilitated.
