Johann Bernhard Michael Schneider (11.05.1905-23.12.1984), born 100 years ago in Würzburg, built his first chess problem at the age of 17, which was to be followed by around 1000 more, mainly two-move problems that achieved numerous national and international tournament successes. Initially supported by Zepler and Birgfeld, Willibald Roese, with whom he maintained an extensive correspondence, became Schneider's actual teacher. Together with Willy Popp (Main-Post), he was the most important representative of the successful Franconian problemists in the middle of the last century.

Johann Bernhard Michael Schneider (* 11 May 1905 in Würzburg; † 23 December 1984 in Schweinfurt) was a German chess composer.

The chess composer
Schneider discovered problem chess in 1920 and published his first problem two years later. In 1924, the Würzburger Volksblatt organised a tournament, and Schneider came first to third with his problems. The Unterfränkische Problemgemeinschaft was founded in 1935. Here he participated with Willy Popp and others in the organisation and as a composer. He was most successful within this problem community.

In 1965 he was appointed international adjudicator for chess composition.

Schneider preferred to create two-move problems, but he also composed three-move problems, self-mates and auxiliary mates.

In total, Schneider composed almost 1000 problems. Around 300 of these were honoured, 25 were included in the FIDE albums. For this he was honoured with the FIDE title of International Master of Chess Compositions in 1979.

The tournament player
Schneider learnt to play chess at the age of 15. He achieved a reasonable level in tournament chess. He won the Lower Franconia championship several times and was also the city champion of Würzburg and Schweinfurt.
