Werner Issler (20-09-1933 - 02-01-2023) Swiss chess player and chess composer

Werner Issler was a strong over the board player (winner of the Coupe Suisse 1964), and a successful, but not very prolific composer. He composed direct mates and more rarely endgame studies.

Werner Issler was one of the most important Swiss composers and specialised in particular in two-movement pieces. He was a long-time friend of Herbert Ahues, from whom he received more than 300 unpublished two-movement pieces shortly before his death, with the instruction to sift through this estate, publish those worthy of publication and destroy the rest. Issler distributed this treasure to the problem editors of five journals - they are still the source of posthumous Ahues reprints (see also the introduction to the Zweizüger reprints in "Die Schwalbe", issue 279, June 2016, page 498).

Werner Issler became an International Judge in 1977 and was a respected International Judge for twomovers.

The cremation took place in the closest family circle. The funeral service took place on Friday, 10 February 2023 in Elsau. At 2.00 pm at the Waldfriedhof and at 2.40 pm in the Reformed Church.
