Painting
Willem Korteling came from a well-known Deventer family of painters. He received his first drawing lessons from his father Bartus Korteling. When he thought Willem had enough talent, he was given permission to make painting his profession. Originally, the backyard of the family home was the inspiration for studies of flowers, chickens and other small animals. Later, these themes were expanded to include landscapes, small animals, birds and still lifes, which he painted in a way that was as subtle as it was generous. Throughout his life, Korteling continued to paint in and around his home town of Deventer.
