Antons Smelters

Monsignor Antons Smelters was a Catholic priest.

From October 1956 as a vicar he served in Belgium, from May 1958 for 13 years in Diepholz (North Germany).

On 1991 he came back to Latvia and from that time till the end of his life served as a priest in St. Jacob Cathedral in Riga.

Especially he took care about indigent people, organizing fundraising for giving them loaves of bread. Asked why he is doing that, the priest answered: "Because I know what means to be starving."

Contemporaries remember him as kind, exact, attractive person with great sense of humour.
