Daina Skadmane (March 19, 1990 - November 21, 2013) was a Latvian artist. On 21 November 2013, Daina Skadmane together with her father Janis Skadmanis were killed in the shopping centre "Maxima" roof collapse in Riga, Latvia.

Biography

Daina Skadmane was born on March 19, 1990 in Riga, Latvia.[4] She was the twin daughter of Janis and Zinta Skadmanis, her twin sister is Anda (artist),[5] youngest sister Ruta, oldest sister Maija and brother Marcis Liors Skadmanis.[6] Daina Skadmane was a painter and lithography artist,[7] [8] her name is associated with the artwork "Vēja egle" (Christmas Tree in The Wind and Fir-tree in the Wind)[9] in Riga, Latvia.[10][11] Her Christmas installation was exhibited in Kronvalds Park, near the House of Congress in Riga, Latvia.[12] After the Zolitude tragedy, the President of Latvia Andris Berzins decided to use Daina Skadmane's artwork "Vēja egle" for the National Christmas card 2013 which was sent to world leaders.[13][14]

Various of Daina Skadmane art work and copies of art work are exhibited around the world - Great Britain, USA, Israel, Russia, Czech Republic, and Germany. Skadmane death

Daina Skadmane and her father were killed on November 21, 2013 in the Zolitude shopping centre roof collapse in Riga, Latvia, at 17:41 local time.[15] She was 23 years old. Daina Skadmane was the youngest victim among the fifty-four people who were killed and dozens injured when the roof of a large store collapsed in Latvia's capital Riga.[16][17] It is the third worst roof disaster in Europe in 30 years.[18]
