M-1 Challenge Champion Guram Gugenishvili dies in car accident.
Guram Gugenishvili, the number 1 heavyweight prospect in the BE Scouting Report, has passed away according to M-1 Global.
According to a statement made by M-1 Global, their former M-1 Challenge Heavyweight Champion, Guram Gugenishvili has passed away after being involved in a car accident in Georgia. The talented European grappler was just 28 years old.
"He was a great athlete and a kind, open-hearted person. RIP Guram," a statement by M-1 Global read.
The 6-foot-5 Georgian had a 12-2 record in a career that started back in 2009. He opened his career with 11 straight wins, and at one point, he was touted as one of the best prospects in the sport. In 2011, Guram was named as the Number 1 heavyweight at the Bloody Elbow Scouting Report.
During his MMA career, Guram had won the M-1 Ukraine, M-1 Selection Western Europe and M-1 Challenge titles. On his last bout in April, he had returned from a lengthy absence due to various injuries and defeated KOTC champ Tony Bonello in the first round of their IGF bout in Japan.
According to M-1, Guram was scheduled for another bout in Japan before the year ended.
