Alastair Edward Henry Worsley (October 1960 – 24 January 2016) was a British former Army officer, and an explorer, who died while attempting to be the first person to cross the Antarctic unaided.
Worsley's intention was to follow in the spirit of his hero, Ernest Shackleton, and before starting the trip raised over £100,000 for the Endeavour Fund, set up to assist injured servicemen and women. He had covered 913 miles and only had 30 miles to go. He had spent 71 days, but with the last two days in his tent with exhaustion and severe dehydration.
Worsley radioed for help and was airlifted to Punta Arenas, Chile, where he was diagnosed with bacterial peritonitis, and died of "complete organ failure", at the Clinica Magallanes in Punta Arenas, Chile. He was 55.
Worsley lived in Fulham, London, was married to Joanna, and had two children.
