At least 383 people killed by 6.5 - magnitude earthquake in south-west China
A strong earthquake struck a mountainous region in southwest China on Sunday afternoon, causing a large number of buildings to collapse and killing at least 350 people, the government said. State-run media said at least 150 people were killed.
The 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck at about 4:30 p.m. local time (0830 GMT) on Sunday and was centered in Ludian County, which is located in Zhaotong prefecture of Yunnan province. It struck about 12 kilometers (7.4 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to China’s Earthquake Network Center (CENC).
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the strength of the quake at 6.1. “Extensive damage is probable and the disaster is likely widespread,” the USGS said in a preliminary assessment. It estimated up to 736,000 people near the epicenter could have experienced ‘strong’ to ‘very strong’ shaking.
