Nikolai Shchepkin

Nikolai Mikhailovich Shchepkin - Russian publisher, educator and social activist, son of Mikhail Shchepkin, father of Nikolai Shchepkin. He completed a course at Physics and Mathematics Department of Moscow State University. After serving for several years in the dragoon regiment, he in 1847 moved to Berlin, where he attended university lectures on chemistry and agriculture. He was elected in Moscow Duma and the Moscow Province Zemstvo Assembly, an honorary magistrate and director of the Moscow Municipal Credit Society. His main occupation was publishing. In 1856, N.M. Shchepkin with Stankevich and Annenkov formed a partnership for the publication and distribution of books. He published three collections of poems by N. Nekrasov, N. Ogarev and A. Koltsov, "The dramatic works of Shakespeare" translated by Ketcher, "Russian Folk Legends" and "Russian Folk Tales", the first 12-volume collection of B. Belinsky (1859-1862). He also published the magazine "Bibliographic Notes", which has been repeatedly harassed by censorship.
