Zlekas: forgotten nazism crime
Kurzeme (Kurland) was the region in Latvia, which remained occupied by Nazi German forces until the end of WWII (8 of May 1944).
Parts of former Latvian legion in German army under organised military group under command of General Kurelis to fight both against Nazi Germany and Soviet Union and to keep Kurzeme untill the West Allies will help to renew independence of Latvia.
At the same time - end of 1944, several groups of the "red" partisans started actions against German army.
After a month of battles between Kurelis group and German forces, the Kurelis Group was surrounded, part of officeers shot,- part sent to Germany.
In the beginning of December general Jeckeln decided to "give a lesson" to "partisan supporters" and draw circle around small village - Zlekas and commanded to eliminate everything inside this circlce. 160 people were shot, including children, their houses were burnt down.
